I bunken af indlæg på Readability-to-read-listen, er jeg nået til Ann Coulters kommentar fra torsdags angående præsident Barack Obamas påståede budgetdisciplin. Hele påstyret handler om, at der er en statistiker, som har lavet en graf der viser, at Barack Obama er den præsident blandt de seneste seks, der har udvist størst mådehold for så vidt angår væksten i det offentlige forbrug.
Dét passer selvfølgelig ikke. Ikke desto mindre har rigtigt mange medier — fra demokratiske kampagneblogs til Wall Street Journal og Reuters — viderebragt usandheden. Statistikeren der har lavet grafen, Rex Nutting, har konkret begået følgende fejl (jeg citerer fra Ann Coulters indlæg):
It turns out Rex Nutting, author of the phony Marketwatch chart, attributes all spending during Obama’s entire first year, up to Oct. 1, to President Bush.That’s not a joke.
That means, for example, the $825 billion stimulus bill, proposed, lobbied for, signed and spent by Obama, goes in … Bush’s column. (And if we attribute all of Bush’s spending for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and No Child Left Behind to William Howard Taft, Bush didn’t spend much either.)
